The Covid-19 pandemic has caused an unprecedented set of circumstances world-wide. No community was left untouched by the effects of Covid-19 on the health and wellbeing of people within those communities and beyond. The pandemic brought about unprecedented illness, anxiety and uncertainty for people all over the world and the effects are likely to last for generations.

Whilst the lasting impact of Covid-19 is negative, it is important not to forget that amongst all the devastation, uncertainty and isolation there were some positives. The pandemic brought many local communities together to support one another through the wide-ranging challenges brought about by Covid.

The community response from the people of Calne was unprecedented and showed a real dedication to supporting friends, neighbours, businesses and the wider community in the depths of a world-wide pandemic. New community groups were formed and residents went above and beyond in a myriad of ways to support one another through the pandemic. The Calne community has undoubtedly emerged from the pandemic with a stronger bond, and this is something that Calne Town Council would like to commemorate and celebrate.

Project Brief

Calne Town Council is seeking a local artist for the creation of a commemorative artwork that will be a permanent structure to look back on COVID-19 and all of the groups and residents who came together during the pandemic. This may include a memory capsule to which residents could contribute messages.

Proposals from local artists are sought to put forward an idea to meet this brief.

The location for the piece has yet to be decided. As part of the proposal we would expect the artist to identify a suitable space within the town for the piece to be located.

There is no payment for the initial design and any selected artwork would need to be within a budget of circa £5k-£8k (to include creation and installation) which is subject to approval by Calne Town Council.

It is anticipated that the piece will be installed in July 2022 and officially unveiled on 16th July 2022.
