How Calne Town Council works
The Town Council will from 1 April 2008 carry out its business through three committees, which meet on a two-week cycle, with the full council meeting bi-monthly to deal with its statutory business. There are 15 minutes at the start of each meeting for public participation. A full calendar of meetings can be found below, agendas and minutes can be downloaded from the homepage.

There are nineteen elected members (Councillors) whose responsibility it is to ensure the Town Councils business is carried out in line with statutory requirements. These Councillors represent the public’s interest at the various Committee, Sub-Committee and Working Groups at which decisions to improve the Town and its facilities are made.
The Amenities Committee looks after all the open spaces and play areas in the Town Council’s ownership, including the Town Hall and Curzon Street Cemetery.
The Policy and Resources Committee is responsible for all aspects of policy making, financial and staffing matters. It interacts with the community by giving grants to support local organisations.
The Town Development and Planning Committee sees a change to our committee structure combining Development Control and Planning and Economic Regeneration. It will meet on a three weekly cycle to discuss the Town Council’s response to planning applications. Also commenting to other authorities on items such as local and structure plans and issues relating to the regeneration of the town, public transport, car parking, public footpaths and bridleways.
Members of the public are welcome to attend meetings and there are 15 minutes set aside at the start of each meeting to allow public to participate and to ask questions.

Town Mayor & Deputy Town Mayor
The role of Town Mayor & Deputy Town Mayor are important civic roles within the council.
The Town Mayor
The Town Mayor is elected each year at a ceremony known as Mayor Making. During the year of office the Town Mayor will attend numerous events in the community, such as school fetes, festivals, new business openings. The Town Mayor plays an important role in raising the profile of the Town Council both within the town and elsewhere.
The Town Mayor is empowered to sign legal documents on behalf of the council.
A photographic record of Calne Mayors can be found on the walls of the Council Chamber within the Town Hall. The names of all previous Town & Borough Mayors are listed in the chamber.
The Town Mayor chairs the meetings of Calne Town Council and has the right to attend all committee meetings.
The present Town Mayor is Councillor H R Marshall.
The Deputy Town Mayor
A Deputy Town Mayor is also elected each year at the Mayor Making ceremony. As you would expect, the Deputy will step in in the event the Town Mayor is unable to undertake a specific duty.

The Deputy Town Mayor is automatically appointed as chair of the Policy & Resources committee, and also has the right to attend all committee meetings of the council. The Deputy also has the power to sign legal documentation on behalf of the Town Council.
The present Deputy Town Mayor is Councillor Mrs H Plenty.
